Student death ruled accidental, drug overdose
Medical examiners determined a 23-year-old MSU psychology senior died from a drug overdose.
John Cornelius Eckhold III was found dead by his father on April 20 after he hadn't heard from his son for a few days. Eckhold lived in Woodside Apartments, located on the corner of Haslett Road and Woodside Drive.
Ingham County Chief Medical Examiner Dennis Jurczak said Eckhold III used cocaine, methadone (an opiate similar to morphine) and Valium.
The death is being ruled as accidental, Jurczak said.
"He just took the drugs, which he shouldn't have done," Jurczak said. "This just happens sometimes."
Neighbors last reported seeing Eckhold alive at 3:30 p.m. on April 19.
